PLANNING

Measure once. Show your workings.

A practical way to build room areas, cut-outs and a traceable carton estimate.

Break the floor into rectangles

Measure length and width along the floor and draw a simple sketch. Split an L-shaped room into non-overlapping rectangles, or use one containing rectangle with a rectangular cut-out. Record closets and alcoves separately if they will receive flooring. Avoid counting the same area twice.

Subtract with care

A cut-out in the studio sits in one corner of its room. It can represent a missing section in an L-shaped space. Subtract a fixed footprint only when the selected installation system calls for flooring to stop there. A rug, freestanding sofa or movable table is not a cut-out.

Agree an allowance

Cuts, board direction, room shape, pattern and reserve stock change the amount to order. The studio starts at 10% for discussion and lets you choose 0–50%. Ask the supplier or installer to confirm an appropriate allowance. A herringbone layout needs its own product and installation plan.

Convert, round and confirm

The studio converts metres to square feet before using carton coverage and cost rates. It applies the allowance to the total net area, then rounds once to full cartons of one product. Different products, batches or rooms that cannot share offcuts should be planned separately.
